Jewish Cemetery Weißensee

The Jewish cemetery in Weissensee is not only the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe, around 420,000 square meters, but also one of the best known. The cemetery was inaugurated in 1888 and has not stopped operating since then.We will visit the graves of important figures in the Jewish community such as the musician Louis Lewandowski, the philosopher Herman Cohen, the writer Micha Yosef Ben-Gurion, the publisher Samuel Fischer, the writer Stefan Heim and the painter Lesser Uri. Their lives document the fertility and success of the Jews after the unification of Germany in 1871 and the acceptance of equal rights.

But this cemetery also records the destruction of this rich life in the middle of the twentieth century. On many tombstones are the names of family members who were murdered in the extermination camps and were not allowed to be buried here, and some of the graves even lack tombstones due to the poverty of the families.

In the archive of the cemetery you can find information about all the graves.
