Revolution and civil war in Germany 1918 to 1920
It’s November 9, 1918: the German Emperor abdicates and goes into exile in the Netherlands, German citizens in unrest and frustration. How did it happen and how were the restless months that followed? Tens of thousands of Germans were killed in fierce battles between the conservative forces and the revolutionary forces. Over 300 political murders carried out in the first years of the young German democracy, including Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht and Walter Rathenau, reflect the enormous conflict that prevailed within the German people. A conflict that culminated with the rise of the Nazis to power 14 years later.
In the tour we will examine the various political currents and alliances forged during this period and describe the causes of the civil war in Berlin in 1918/1919. Further more, we will understand the consequences that resulted from it and determined the fate of the already unstable Weimar Republic.
During the 3-hour tour we will visit places that played a central role during the Civil War:
The Reichstag
Chancellor’s Office in Wilhelm Strasse
The House of the Prussian lords
The Palace Square and the Palace Stables
