The "Submarines"- hiding stories of Jews in Berlin 2 hours walking or driving tour
The outbreak of World War II and the Nazi regime’s cruel decision to deport and exterminate Jews from Germany and Europe resulted in approximately 1,700 Jews having to hide in Berlin between 1941-1945 to escape extermination. These people were also called the “submarines”.
We will examine the conditions in which Jews were forced to live from 1939 and especially from the beginning of the mass deportations to to Ghettos and Death Camps in Eastern Europe from October 1941. How did the German Jews manage to hide throughout this period? Who helped them and in what way and who betrayed them? What happened among the dwindling Jewish community and what relations prevailed between the Jews and their neighbors? During the tour we will be told about incredible personal destinies and daring rescue operations.
